Your perfect day out in the heart of The Weald

Hartfield village

Hartfield’s church, St Mary the Virgin, is just a short stroll up Church Street from the Anchor Inn and well worth exploring. The main parts of this impressive church date back to the 13th and 15th centuries with the earliest surviving gravestone dated 1634.

Coming back down Church Street and turning left up the High Street you’ll go past our village shop and a little way further on you’ll find Pooh Corner. This quaint building now houses a tea-shop and stocks memorabilia for all things Winnie-the-Pooh related.

It was originally the shop which Christopher Robin used to buy his sweets from when spending his summers at Cotchford Farm (which gained fame of another kind in the 1960s as home to Rolling Stones founder member, Brian Jones). More about Winnie-the-Pooh.

The Hartfield Arts and Theatrical Society (HARTS) stage regular events at the Village Hall, at the annual village fete and sometimes here at the Anchor Inn! Check out their Facebook page for the latest information.

On Monday and Wednesday evenings in the summer you can watch the traditional Sussex game of Stoolball or on Sundays relax and support our cricket team. Their clubhouse and grounds are conveniently located opposite the Anchor Inn, along with a children’s playground.

If you’re planning to visit in the summer then check the date of our village fete – a wonderfully traditional fair with fun for all the family.
