High Weild AONB

Located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Hartfield is a popular stopping point for walkers. The Forest Way (which leads on to the Worth Way) and High Weald Landscape Trail both travel through the village. And we’re close to the Wealdway.

Local Walks

If you’re planning to stay a while and explore then there are plenty of local walks to try, in addition to the national trails. An eight mile circular walk starts at Hartfield Church and is the perfect way to explore our beautiful village.

There are numerous walks in Ashdown Forest, the home of Winnie-the-Pooh, including sights such as the original Poohsticks bridge, the Enchanted Place, Roo’s sandpit and, of course, the Heffalump trap!

For those travelling with small children, there are easy going, pushchair-friendly walks nearby at the Forestry Commission Birchden Wood (look out for the wood carvings on the way round) and the Broadwater Warren nature reserve.

Further Afield

The plethora of National Trust properties nearby offer opportunities to explore their estates and woodlands. And over the border in Kent, the Tunbridge Wells circular is a challenging but beautiful 27 ½ mile walk.​​​​

Walkers are very welcome at The Bear Inn, whether you’re planning to stay with us or just pop in for a quick meal and refreshing drink. We welcome muddy boots – and muddy paws – in the pub as well as our beer garden.

 

We’re happy to refill water bottles free of charge and can also arrange packed lunches for our guests
